The 3D Experience

The 3D Experience

… Just before you ask, I have NOT seen the movie mentioned above. Nor have I seen any of the movies of this somewhat successful series. Because I have heard horrible things about it.

In retrospective I would have liked to watch Avatar in 3D (watched in 2D instead). So far there wasn’t any other movie which persuaded me to spend 3 extra Euros for one ticket. Do you have any movie in mind where the 3D really added to the movie experience?? Seriously now, guys, I don’t know…

I must admit, paying more to view a movie in ’3D’ is annoying to me too. Not to mention, if it doesn’t work you feel terribly ripped off! Personally, I’m going to stick to the old fashioned way. ^^

  2. Dutch says:

3D frustrates the hell outta me due to the fact I already wear glasses, which seem to mess with the glasses they give you at the theatre. So, usually I just opt out of the 3D (unless it’s some movie I really wanted to see like “despicable me” which I survived the 3D for).
As to Resident Evil, I’ve played some of the games and loved them, and watched all the movies, which I loved up until the latest (oh wait the new one’s out, haven’t seen that one) until the second to latest which was jus a tad far fetched. However if you think you’d hurl at the sight of gore, probably wise to stay away from those movies :)

“Incredible! It feels and smells just like it was frocefully expelled from a human body! Boy, these guys are good…”

You know, technically the movie is already 4-D, counting Time as a dimension. ;)

  4. Lee says:

    @El Richardo Curse physics! xD

I’m one of the people who can’t really see the 3-D effect unless it’s REALLY in-your-face. The only movie I’ve seen with 3-D where it was even apparent to me was Avatar. It was very well done and all, but I still prefer to watch 2-D movies.

  6. Greg Bulmash says:

There were a couple of movies where the audience was given “scratch n’ sniff” cards. At points in the movie, a number would flash on the screen and the audience was supposed to scratch that number on the card and smell it. It was called “smell-o-vision”.

I saw Avatar in 3D, but generally I think that too many movies just add 3D so they can charge for the glasses, but never use it in such a way that it makes it worthwhile. I even saw Inception in 2D, but paid extra to see it on an IMAX screen with IMAX sound. That was worthwhile.

  7. Nezumi says:

Dial M For Murder was supposedly a really good 3D movie, but I’ve never seen it in the original 3D. Technically, I’ve never seen it at all.

  8. Lydia says:

Yeah, I think a lot of these movies that are bragging about how they’re 3-D are just doing it for the $$$. Clash of the Titans in 3-D was just lame. Even my mom and hubby couldn’t see the 3-D effect for most of the movie, and they usually can.

  9. MistingWolf says:

I agree with Dutch about how the 3D glasses over normal glasses don’t work so swell. I also agree with Lydia in that it just kind of escapes me, so I don’t see the epicness those lucky others see. I do still enjoy the good ol’ 2D movies.

@Greg: Oh, I heard about “smell-o-vision”. In Cologne we now have only one myjor theatre left which is sometimes THAT crowded, you get the “smell-o-vision” for free!:)
Wasn’t that an invention by William Castle? Or did he just use the shaking chairs?
Inception on IMAX screen sounds amazing!!!
@Nezumi: The Hitchcock movie? It was in 3D? That I didn’t know! Wouldn’t it be cool to re-release it in cinemas nowadays?
@Lydia: I guess, that’s the problem with bad 3D. It can look cheap.
@Dutch: I heard many friends moan&groan about the thing with the glasses. That makes going to the movies a real unconformtable experience… Oh, usually I like gore and zombie movies and I played some Resident Evil. Maybe I’ll watch the first some day…

By the way, the first time I heard about the term “4D theatre” was at an amusement park here in Germany (The Warner Brothers Movie Park) where they showed a short with a pirate Leslie Nielsen. When he spat, water came out of the seats in front of you. I remember being germophobic that day and wondering if the water was really clean…

I know when I go to the movies I have to wear my contacts or it bothers me. I think it is crazy how expensive 3-D is where I live. It is like 8 dollars for crappy plastic glasses.

  11. Lydia says:

Total ticket prices for an adult WITH the 3-D glasses is something like 10.75 here. O_o I can’t wrap my brain around movie ticket prices in cities!

  12. Nezumi says:

Yeah, it was originally 3D… but it mostly wasn’t played as such on its initial release, due to 3D going out of style at the time — it didn’t see a wide 3D run until a 80s rerelease for this purpose, following the successful one-time 3D showing. There’s a bit more on it on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, the current DVD release of it doesn’t have the 3D version — I’ve heard this problem plagues films that were 3D but weren’t known for it.

  13. admin says:

@Geier: Thanks! I didn’t know that scene and laughed tears! Brilliant!
@Lydia: 10.75 is quite a lot. But you’re not in Britain, are you? Then it would be quite a deal. :/
@Nezumi: That’s an interesting fact. I’d like to know how they used 3D back then. Especially with Hitchcock.

  14. Lee says:

I agree with everybody here about sticking to 2-D. I remember we’d bought a DVD that supposedly had 3D with it. I think it was a Spy Kids film. Anyway, it was those lame red and blue glasses that did nothing. It actually hurt to watch with them on!
    @MistingWolf: All so true.

  15. Lydia says:

Sarah: For a small town, $10 seems pretty steep, but we have a very nice theater for being just a small farming community, so I don’t mind paying a little extra. We also try to go during the matinee hours, which shaves off three dollars per adult ticket, and we don’t usually shell out for commissions. (Theater’s don’t carry much I can eat, anyway.) The nice thing is that it IS such a small town, if you go in during a slow time like a weekday showing, you often have the theater completely to yourself. >:D I don’t care how you slice it, $10 is a great price for a private showing ! ^_^

Piranha 3-D is quite fun, but it might be a little gory for you, if you ARE actually anything like your 2-D counterpart…

Coraline, definitely worth it. Love your comic strip.
