I guess the term “Graphic Novel” has also arrived in Germany by now. I personally don’t care whether I call them comics, graphic novels or Paper-O-Matic 3000. I just hope that the image of comic books will change in Germany and that more people will come to read them.

P.S.: I haven’t read Habibi yet, so I don’t mean to criticize this book at all. 
Just to explain this a little bit more cause I realized it might be necessary for you international readers: For some time now we’ve been having a discussion in Germany about the term “Graphic Novel” because the book trade is using it to label some comics as something ‘better’ as in ‘more sophisticated’ than the usual comics. Comics and comic books as a form in general are not treated with much respect here and seen as kids stuff. To get the book trade to jump on the band wagon, the publishers here literally slap stickers saying ‘Graphic Novel’ on books they deem worthy.
Stupid? Yeah, I think so. Understandable from a selling point of view? Certainly.
But I still don’t like the fact that there is a trench between comics and Graphic Novels and it’s getting deeper and wider.

I love this! I’ve worked on a farm since I was 11. It’s all too true that pepole have no idea where their food is coming from. At the farmer’s markets that I do, I have customers come up to me all the time to say I realized I need to think about what I’m feeding myself and my family,’ and they start asking questions. That’s one of my favorite parts of my job.
I do think that there is something more grown-up sounding with ‘graphic novel’, but personally ‘comic’ has connotations of superheroes, whereas ‘graphic novel’ is more like a novel, just with pictures. Most of the graphic novels I’ve ever read have been Shakespeare adaptations, so maybe that’s just me…
What I find most disgraceful is that in the ‘Graphic Novel’ section of my local bookshop, more than half of it is manga. MANGA IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM BOTH COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS. JEEZ.
