Comedic Timing
I officially apologize for today’s sabotaged punchline. Let’s all hope I’ll get control over my own strip soon again.
And thanks for everybody who explained their “Kinder surprise” experiences to me. I never thought about the fact they could be forbidden in the US, but I’m not really baffled about it. I really enjoyed the international discussion!
Well, I’m sure every country has its bad comedians though . Just to let you know. Mario Barth is my least favourite German comedian. He’s loud, he’s vulgar, he does the always trending gender jokes. And mostly: He’s not funny. At least I don’t get it why he’s so super-successful.
Do you have a least favourite comedian in your country? Is there a universal formula for very bad humour?

to know bad comedy, you have to have experianced good / GREAT comedy, Vulger isn’t comedy, it shows a limited vocabulary. Watching people get hurt, (even if its their own stupidity) isn’t comedy.
Great comedy comes from great comedians. Bob Hope. George Burns.& Gracy Allen Carol Burnette & Tim Conway – Betty White. – A woman who is proving , that someone in their 90s is a contributing member of society. – It wasn’t always what they said, but how they said it, the simple straight forward delivery of lines, the timing, Comedy is an art form, just as singing, and dancing, It tells a story and reaches down into your gut and pulls out laughter.
It is also what the comedian does with his/ her life that makes them great- they become not only someone that we watch, but someone we look up to.
Having grown up, with watching the greatest of the great in my child hood, – well, I have used them as a guide of what a good comedian that is worth my time to watch, becomes. If they don’t measure up? They never make the cut.
A horse walks into a bar, the bar tender looks at the horse and says “Hey, why the long face?”
George Burns to Gracy Allen “Say Goodnight Gracy”
Gracy Allen “Goodnight Gracy”
A DRY PERIOD??? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! Omg,it’s so gross but also hilarious! XD
I think Britain (and not just England – I’m talking about comedians from across the world that have come here) has some of the best comedians in the world. There was even a German comedian on one episode of a comedy show I like, named either Henning or Hennig something (the credits went too fast
), and he was pretty funny. So maybe the German comedians that you like have dispersed across the world? Who knows.
Least favourite comedians? I dont really know. I can think of supposed comedy shows that personally I find not the least bit funny (i.e. Mr Bean) but not really that many comedians. I think bad humour is up to personal opinion. I hate jokes that are offensive towards anyone else but there are horribly racist people in my classes at school that crack them and snigger at them all the time. I personally believe such people should have their liver pecked out by eagles every day until they stop making such jokes, but again, personal opinion.
In America, I think the one universally reviled comedian is Dane Cook. Well, not universally obviously, he has enough of a fan base to have HBO specials and sell out giant stadiums, but his humor is mostly getting a chuckle from the audience then repeating/yelling that same thing 20 times to draw the laughter out. He doesn’t really tell jokes, that is, there’s no setup leading to a payoff, just “This thing happened.” type humor. Basically you’re either a huge fan or you hate him and his fans for making him successful.
Personally I’m not a fan of the “southern” comedians, the ones with the characters they’ve invented that revel in ignorance or simple living, Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, etc, but I don’t begrudge them their success. If anything in the world is subjective, it’s comedy.
BTW, I would follow you in twitter as I have a stable of fellow webcomicers that I enjoy watching, but being a typical monoglot American I’m not sure that would benefit either of us at all.
Growing up the funniest comedians to me were Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon.

I used to love Dennis Miller because he was so adept at pointing out the absurdities of U.S. politics and pop culture in general, but then he did his Face/Heel turn after 9/11 and became just plain stupid. Another “comedian” that I don’t find particularly comic is Adam Sandler. For some reason he just grates on my nerves. I suppose that my favorite comedian was the late, great George Carlin. That guy certainly knew his way around pretty much any subject that he commented on and could push all the right buttons (in me at least) to get a laugh.
Thank you all for the feedback, guys. Sorry that I haven’t got the time right now to comment on each one. Hm, seems to me I should definitely check out some of the names that pop up here.
Bob Hope, definitely a memory from my childhood, too!
